Residents in Coastal and Inland Hillsborough County should seek immediate shelter indoors due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin FL issued a Special Weather Statement today, September 20, at 4:27 PM EDT, warning of wind gusts up to 50 mph.
Doppler radar detected a strong, nearly stationary thunderstorm over Palm River-Clair Mel, near Brandon. This alert is effective immediately and expires at 5:00 PM EDT today.
The NWS advises that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, Palm River-Clair Mel, East Lake-Orient Park, Florida State Fairgrounds, Palm River, Progress Village, Orient Park, Boyette, Mango, Valrico, Bloomingdale, Seffner, and Gibsonton.
Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. For your safety, if you are outdoors, seek shelter inside a building or vehicle immediately.
