Groveland Completes Water Meter Tower Network Early
Groveland completed installation of 17 water meter data receiving towers across the city in early June, finishing Phase 3 of its water infrastructure upgrade ahead of schedule.
Contractor Ferguson erected the 50-foot towers between April and June on public property including sewer lift station sites. The towers collect water usage data directly from residential and commercial meters, replacing manual meter readings.
The city plans to launch a web-based portal as early as 2027 that will give customers real-time access to their water usage. The towers operate on low-power radio frequency in the 900 MHz range, the same spectrum used by garage door openers and cordless phones. The equipment meets Federal Communications Commission safety standards and contains no cameras, audio recording devices, or surveillance equipment.
Installation required no entry into homes or businesses and caused no water service interruptions. City officials say the system will improve billing accuracy, speed up leak detection, and help customers identify conservation opportunities.
This phase follows replacement of approximately 5,000 aged water and irrigation meters completed earlier in the program. The city funded the upgrade through its utilities program at no direct cost to residents or businesses.
