Groveland Protects 60% of Land as Open Space
Groveland has allocated more than 60% of its land to preserved open space through its updated Future Land Use Map, which designates at least 50% for conservation and protects a minimum of 10% of agricultural lands.
The Florida city applies Smart Growth principles to balance rapid development with environmental preservation. The approach mixes land uses and housing types while directing growth into compact, walkable communities, allowing Groveland to maintain prairies, wetlands, and farms alongside new construction.
Open space preservation attracts homebuyers, ecotourism operators, and agricultural businesses to Groveland. The strategy also increases resilience against storms, improves air and water quality, and protects wildlife habitats.
The city is updating its Comprehensive Plan's Conservation Element to focus on the Palatlakaha River and Green Swamp. New conservation corridors will connect throughout Groveland and link to its Parks and Trails Master Plan.
