Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Today Along Horry, Georgetown Coasts
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown Counties today, October 11, until 8:00 PM EDT, due to dangerous rip currents; swim near a lifeguard and know how to escape if caught.
Coastal residents and visitors in Horry and Georgetown Counties are advised that a Rip Current Statement is in effect today, October 11, until 8:00 PM EDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington, NC, has issued this alert due to dangerous rip currents and a strong south to north longshore current expected for east and southeast-facing beaches.
Rip currents pose a significant threat, capable of pulling even experienced swimmers away from the shore into deeper waters. The NWS emphasizes the importance of caution for anyone entering the ocean today.
If you plan to be at the beach, swim near a lifeguard. Should you get caught in a rip current, the NWS advises to relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. This Rip Current Statement is effective immediately and remains in effect until 8:00 PM EDT tonight.
