Extreme Storm Surge Warning for Coastal Franklin: Seek Immediate Shelter
An Extreme Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Coastal Franklin County, including Apalachicola, Eastpoint, Carrabelle, and Alligator Point, urging residents to seek immediate shelter from life-threatening storm surge, high winds, potential major flooding, and tornadoes.
A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Coastal Franklin County by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee, effective immediately as of October 9 at 5:05 PM EDT. This warning, categorized as 'Extreme' in severity and 'Immediate' in urgency, affects Apalachicola, Eastpoint, Carrabelle, and Alligator Point. Residents in these areas are advised to remain sheltered in a safe location and not to venture outside.
Life-threatening storm surge of 4-6 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning in surge-prone areas. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Wind gusts up to 65 mph are expected until early Saturday morning, with potential for limited wind damage. Last-minute efforts to protect property should now be complete.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with an additional 2-4 inches of rain forecast, potentially leading to major flooding, evacuations, and rescues. Rivers and streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter numerous structures. A Tornado Watch is also active, indicating a high potential for multiple tornadoes, which could cause extensive damage and hinder emergency operations. Move quickly to the safest place within your shelter if a tornado warning is issued.
