Coastal residents and visitors in Gulf and Franklin Counties are advised to exercise extreme caution as a Rip Current Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL. This statement is effective immediately, October 10, 2026, at 12:06 PM EDT, and extends until October 12, 2026, at 4:00 AM EDT.

A High Rip Current Risk is in effect through late Sunday night, meaning dangerous rip currents are expected. Additionally, a High Surf Advisory is active until 8 PM EDT /7 PM CDT/ this evening, with large breaking waves of 3 to 7 feet anticipated in the surf zone. These conditions pose significant risks for swimmers and surfers, including localized beach erosion.

The NWS warns that rip currents can sweep even the most experienced swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to these dangerous surf conditions.

If you choose to enter the water, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises relaxing and floating. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If you cannot escape the current, face the shore and call or wave for help.
