Dangerous Rip Currents and High Surf Expected for Gulf and Franklin County Beaches
A Rip Current Statement has been issued for Coastal Gulf and Franklin Counties by the National Weather Service, warning of dangerous rip currents and high surf from October 10 until October 12.
Coastal Gulf and Franklin County residents and visitors are advised of a High Rip Current Risk and High Surf Advisory in effect immediately. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL issued a Rip Current Statement on October 10 at 2:11 AM EDT, which will remain in effect until October 12 at 4:00 AM EDT.
Dangerous rip currents are expected through late Sunday night. Additionally, a High Surf Advisory is in place from 11 AM EDT /10 AM CDT/ Friday until 11 AM EDT /10 AM CDT/ Sunday, with large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet anticipated in the surf zone. These conditions will create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and may lead to localized beach erosion.
The NWS urges inexperienced swimmers to remain out of the water due to the dangerous surf. For those who choose to enter the water, it is crucial to swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
