High Rip Current Risk, High Surf Advisory Issued for Gulf and Franklin County Beaches
A High Rip Current Risk and High Surf Advisory are in effect for Coastal Gulf and Coastal Franklin counties, with dangerous rip currents and large waves expected. Inexperienced swimmers should avoid the water.
Day.News has received an urgent alert from the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL. A Rip Current Statement and High Surf Advisory are in effect for Coastal Gulf and Coastal Franklin counties. Inexperienced swimmers are advised to remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.
A High Rip Current Risk is in effect through late Sunday night. Dangerous rip currents are expected. A High Surf Advisory is also in effect from Friday, October 9, at 11 AM EDT (10 AM CDT) until Sunday, October 11, at 11 AM EDT (10 AM CDT). Large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet are expected in the surf zone.
These conditions will create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, in addition to localized beach erosion. Rip currents can quickly sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters.
If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises relaxing and floating. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If escape is not possible, face the shore and call or wave for help. If swimming, do so near a lifeguard.
