Six Lee County Seniors Win National Merit Scholarships

Six Lee County high school seniors earned National Merit Scholarships, the School District announced. The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.
Three Dunbar High School students received college-sponsored scholarships. Isabella Fowler and Deetya Gogineni won National Merit University of Florida Scholarships; Fowler will study engineering and Gogineni will study medicine. Finlay Scofield earned a National Merit University of Alabama Scholarship and will study materials engineering.
Madelyn Spitzer of Gateway High School received a National Merit University of South Florida Scholarship and will study cardiology.
Two students won the $2,500 National Merit Scholarship, awarded to finalists with the strongest combination of accomplishments and potential. Nishini Fernando of Dunbar High School will attend Harvard University to study medicine. Sebastian Canizares of Fort Myers High School will study law at Georgetown University.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the $2,500 winners in May. Nationwide, about 6,700 high school seniors will receive National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $24 million through 138 participating colleges and universities.
