Bishop Emilio E. Biosca, O.F.M. Cap., presided over his first Sacrament of Confirmation as the Shepherd of the Diocese of Venice on Sept. 19, 2026, at Sacred Heart Parish in Punta Gorda.

“I’m so happy the first confirmation as a bishop is taking place here at Sacred Heart,” Bishop Emilio said. “Like all priests, I’ve had confirmations at the Easter Vigil or under special circumstances, but this is the first time as a bishop in this Rite of Confirmation. Sacred Heart in Washington, D.C., where I came from, is going to be jealous they weren’t first.”

Bishop Emilio emphasized the profound joy the Sacrament of Confirmation brings as candidates embrace their faith. He described the rite as a crucial moment for the Church and a beautiful experience for witnesses, stating that observing sacraments like baptism, marriage, First Holy Communion or even a funeral can renew one’s own Christian life.

“There is something about witnessing a rite and that moment that splashes on us and enables us to renew our own Christian life and see our life in a different way,” Bishop Emilio said.

He encouraged the 12 candidates, their sponsors, families, catechists and parishioners to continue supporting the newly confirmed. Bishop Emilio reminded the candidates that while they had renounced Satan, they must daily practice renouncing sins and professing their faith. He highlighted the availability of online resources for catechetical instruction, urging them to utilize these tools for a vivid and dynamic faith.

The Diocese of Venice’s religious education program prepares young people for this sacrament over two years, focusing on the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

During the rite, Father Russell Wright, administrator of Sacred Heart, called each candidate by name. Bishop Emilio prayed over them before they approached with their sponsors. Sponsors placed a hand on the candidate’s shoulder, and the bishop anointed each forehead with holy Chrism oil, saying, “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” The confirmed responded, “Amen,” and the bishop offered, “Peace be with you,” to which they replied, “And with your spirit.”

Following the ceremony, Bishop Emilio posed for photos with the group, individuals and their sponsors, and families.
