Lee County residents who serve as catechists were recognized for their vital role in the Catholic Church on Catechetical Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026. These dedicated individuals impart faith to people of all ages through parish religious education programs and Catholic schools, serving communities from Fort Myers beaches to Lehigh Acres.
The 2026 theme for Catechetical Sunday, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to bring good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18), highlights Jesus’ mission to bring hope and healing, especially to the vulnerable. Bishop Emilio E. Biosca, O.F.M. Cap., celebrated Mass and presided over the commissioning of approximately two dozen catechists at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Venice.
Bishop Emilio emphasized the crucial role catechists play in helping individuals seeking sacraments and religious education understand God’s presence in their lives. “The stories of catechumens and candidates reveal how God is so generous and merciful,” Bishop Emilio said. “He comes back, time and time again, inviting us to be a part of His Church. Each of us is called to be a witness to the Gospel. Today you renew your commitment in this beautiful mission.”
Following his remarks, Bishop Emilio offered a commissioning prayer and blessed the newly commissioned catechists with holy water. St. Paul Parish in Arcadia commissioned 41 catechists, demonstrating the deep faith throughout Southwest Florida.
Religious education programs across the Diocese of Venice are underway or scheduled to begin by mid-October. Programs cater to faithful of all ages, some focusing on sacramental requirements and others on lifelong religious education. The commissioning of catechists highlights the Church’s commitment to spiritual formation within the community.
