Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs) in Doral have several options to maintain their credentials after their initial nine-year certification expires, according to the American Welding Society (AWS). These options ensure inspectors remain current with industry standards.
One method is passing the Part B Practical Exam, a hands-on assessment covering 46 questions on practical welding inspection tasks. These tasks include applying Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs), using inspection tools and methods, and performing required welds.
Alternatively, CWIs can earn 80 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) through continuing education. These hours must come from courses that align with the Education and Experience Requirements in the AWS Specification for the Qualification of Welding Inspectors (AWS B5.1:2013-AMD1).
Achieving AWS Certified Radiographic Interpreter (CRI) status is another recognized recertification pathway. CWIs who meet specific prerequisites during their nine-year cycle can apply for this credential.
CWIs or Senior Certified Welding Inspectors (SCWI) may also add endorsements to their existing certifications to demonstrate specialized knowledge. Applicants can review a catalog of available endorsements for specific requirements.
To begin any recertification process, applicants must download, review, and complete several forms: the Recertification Application for CWI 9th Year, an Employment Verification Form, a Visual Acuity Exam Form, and potentially an Additional Qualifying Work Experience Form. Applicants also must meet photo ID requirements.
The AWS publishes a price list for its certification programs. The CWI Part B Exam costs $1,130 for members and $1,395 for non-members. A combined CWI Part B Exam and Part B Training package costs $2,235 for members and $2,500 for non-members. Non-member prices often include an AWS Individual Membership. Prices are subject to change, and full payment is due with the application.
CWIs seeking recertification should consult the relevant AWS specifications, including QC1:2016-AMD1 and B5.1:2025, for detailed requirements.
