Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs) and Senior Certified Welding Inspectors (SCWIs) in Doral now can obtain the new AWS D15.1 Railroad Welding Endorsement. The American Welding Society (AWS) offers this qualification to verify expertise in welding railroad cars and locomotives. The endorsement covers materials, design, fabrication, inspection and qualification specific to the railroad industry.

The open-book exam has 50 multiple-choice questions. Candidates must score 72% to pass. Content areas include qualification, fabrication, inspection, reports, records, materials and design. The exam costs $445 for AWS members and $540 for non-members. Eligibility requires a current CWI or SCWI certification. Familiarity with the AWS D15.1 Railroad Welding Specification for Cars and Locomotives (2019) is recommended.

AWS states endorsements do not expire as long as the CWI and SCWI certifications remain active and are renewed on schedule. Each primary certification renewal extends the validity of earned endorsements. For assistance with the endorsement process or course content, visit the AWS Customer Service page.
