Red Flag Warning Issued for Humboldt & Elko Counties: Prepare for Rapid Fire Spread
A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Humboldt and Elko Counties from 11 AM today until 11 PM Saturday, with gusty winds and low humidity creating critical fire conditions. Outdoor burning is not recommended due to rapid fire spread risk.
Residents in Humboldt County (Quinn) and parts of Elko, Eureka, and Lander Counties are urged to exercise extreme caution as a Red Flag Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Elko. This warning is in effect from 11 AM PDT today, October 9, until 11 PM PDT Saturday, October 9.
Critical fire weather conditions are expected due to gusty winds and low humidity, which will significantly increase the risk of rapid wildfire spread. Sustained winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph are forecast for this afternoon, escalating to sustained winds of 20-25 mph with gusts up to 35-40 mph on Saturday. Humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 10-15% today.
The highest threat areas are Fire Weather Zones 437 (Humboldt County-Quinn) and 469 (Central Elko County), particularly where active wildfires are present. The National Weather Service advises that any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly, and high winds may cause active wildfires to spread further. Outdoor burning is not recommended during this period.
A Red Flag Warning signifies that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will shortly. These conditions—strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures—can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Take immediate precautions to prevent sparks and flames.
