USS Silversides Submarine Begins Historic Drydock Preservation

Muskegon, MI – The USS Silversides Submarine Museum has announced the launch of a major drydock preservation project for the USS Silversides (SS-236), one of the most decorated submarines of World War II. This significant effort will ensure the long-term preservation of the vessel and safeguard its legacy for future generations. In July 2026, USS Silversides will begin a carefully planned journey across Lake Michigan to Sturgeon Bay, WI, where she will undergo essential preservation work for the first time in decades. For more than 80 years, USS Silversides has stood as a symbol of American courage, innovation, and sacrifice. Today, much of the vessel lies below the waterline, making it impossible to fully inspect critical structural components while afloat. This complex, multi-phase project is being led by Valkor Energy Services, serving as the Project and Construction Management Team. Valkor brings significant experience in historic maritime preservation, having served as the project management and engineering firm for the multi-year restoration of the Battleship Texas—one of the most complex ship preservation efforts in the United States. Once in Sturgeon Bay, restoration will take place at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, a leading Great Lakes shipyard with the capacity and expertise to accommodate a vessel of Silversides’ size and historic significance. The submarine will be transported under tow by Basic Towing, Inc. of Escanaba, MI, an experienced marine transportation provider specializing in Great Lakes towing operations. During dry dock, specialists will conduct a comprehensive evaluation and restoration effort, including hull cleaning, structural inspection, steel repair, and the application of advanced protective coatings to ensure long-term stability. “USS Silversides is more than a historic artifact—she is a powerful, living connection to the men who served and the communities that supported them,” said Veronica Campbell, Executive Director of the USS Silversides Submarine Museum. “This project represents our commitment to preserving that legacy with care and integrity. By taking action now, we are ensuring that future generations can continue to experience her story firsthand.” The submarine has not undergone full dry dock preservation in over 50 years, and delaying this work increases the risk of structural deterioration, safety concerns, and significantly higher repair costs. The estimated $3.5 million project is supported by a $750,000 grant through the Save America’s Treasures Grant Program, administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Through this grant and the incredible generosity of our major donors and sponsors, this preservation project has come to fruition. The Museum Board and Staff sincerely thank those that stepped up to ensure the submarine’s lasting impact on future generations. The towing of USS Silversides is tentatively scheduled for July 13, 2026, with a return anticipated in mid-October 2026. During this time, the museum building in Muskegon will remain open to the public, continuing to offer exhibits, programming, and educational experiences. While USS Silversides undergoes preservation, the museum is preparing to introduce new waterfront experiences for visitors, including plans for a visiting tall ship. A formal announcement with additional details is expected soon. USS Silversides welcomes community members, donors, and supporters to be part of this historic effort. Contributions directly support critical preservation work and help ensure that this national treasure remains accessible for generations to come. Patricia L Wojtewicz Patricia May 12, 1940 to June 04, 2026 Patricia L. Wojtewicz, 86, formerly of Burtchville Township, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at MediLodge of Yale. Pat was born on May 12, 1940, in Dearborn, Michigan, to William and Elsie (Adams) Allen. One of seven children, she grew up surrounded by family and carried that love of family throughout her life. Following her parents' divorce, her mother married Earl Robertson, who became a beloved stepfather and an important part of the family. Pat met George Wojtewicz, and the couple married in 1961. Together they raised three children and built a life centered on family. Pat was a devoted mother and grandmother who found her greatest joy in caring for those she loved. She was especially fond of her grandchildren and was actively involved in their lives as they grew up. Whether preparing home-cooked meals, sharing special treats, or simply spending time together, she created countless memories that her family will cherish forever. In 2001, Pat relocated to Burtchville Township. She enjoyed working as a housekeeper at the former Thomas Edison Inn before taking on a role she treasured most-becoming a full-time caregiver for her grandchildren, Benjamin and Grace. She was blessed to be a daily part of their childhood, and they were equally blessed to grow up with her love, guidance, and companionship. Pat enjoyed life's simple pleasures. She loved her coffee black, never turned down a sweet treat, and always looked forward to family dinners at Red Lobster. She also enjoyed visiting the casino and trying her luck at the slot machines. Even in her final months, her family smiled knowing she still preferred to eat her pudding first. Pat was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Wojtewicz; her former husband, George Wojtewicz; her mother, Elsie Robertson; her stepfather, Earl Robertson; her father, William Allen; and her siblings, Betty Whitehead, William Allen, Joanne Weir, Helen Ross, Irene Straub, and Eilene Ellis. She is survived by her son, Greg (Andrea) Wojtewicz; her daughter, Reggie (Todd) Goldman; her grandchildren, Rick Tomlin, Jeremy (Brittany) Tomlin, Danielle Wojtewicz, Gregory Wojtewicz, Benjamin Goldman, and Grace Goldman; her great-grandchildren, Ricky Tomlin, Randy Tomlin, Jace Tomlin, Braden Tomlin, Bailey Tomlin, and Cooper Wojtewicz; and many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family members. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Randy Bennett will officiate. Burial will be in Burtchville Township Cemetery. Pat's legacy is one of love, devotion to family, and unwavering generosity. She touched the lives of many through her kindness, warmth, and the care she gave to those around her. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is now at peace and reunited with loved ones who have gone before her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her, including the devoted staff at MediLodge of Yale. A true firecracker in her later years, Pat kept everyone around her smiling and laughing-sometimes intentionally and sometimes not-and her spirited personality will not soon be forgotten. The exhibit opens Thursday, June 11, 2026, with a public reception beginning at 3:30 PM in the SC4 Fine Arts Gallery. Building on the success of last year’s inaugural exhibit, this year’s display features new exhibits and educational materials that explore the significance of Juneteenth and the enduring contributions of African Americans to the nation’s history and culture. U of M Professor Brings Maverick Movies Book Talk to SC4 on June 17

PORT HURON, Mich. — St. Clair County Community College (SC4) will welcome Professor Daniel Herbert of the University of Michigan on June 17, 2026, for a free public discussion of his new book, Maverick Movies: New Line Cinema and the Transformation of American Film. Herbert, a Professor of Film, Television and Media, will present insights from the book, answer audience questions, and sign copies following the presentation. Maverick Movies examines the rise of New Line Cinema, the independent film company founded by Michigan native Robert Shaye that grew into one of Hollywood’s most influential studios during the 1980s and 1990s. The book explores the company’s Michigan roots, its growing role in shaping the American film industry, its eventual sale to Warner Bros., and its continuing impact on contemporary entertainment. New Line Cinema was responsible for a wide range of popular films and franchises, including A Nightmare on Elm Street, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Austin Powers, Blade, Rush Hour, Final Destination, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. “SC4 is excited to bring Professor Herbert to campus for what promises to be a fascinating discussion of film history, popular culture, and Michigan’s connection to one of Hollywood’s most influential studios,” said Sarah Rutallie, Chief of Staff at SC4. “Events like this reflect our commitment to providing enriching cultural and educational experiences that connect our community with leading scholars and important conversations.” Following the discussion, SC4 Cinema will present a screening of the 1990 cult classic House Party. The colorful comedy, rated R for language and crude humor, features wall-to-wall early-1990s hip-hop music and stars Kid ‘N Play, Martin Lawrence, and Robin Harris. SC4 Opens Second Annual Juneteenth Exhibit June 11 with Free Reception

"PORT HURON, Mich. — St. Clair County Community College (SC4) will mark Juneteenth with its second annual exhibition celebrating African American history, culture and achievement. Community members, students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the free opening reception and view the exhibition, which will remain on display through the end of the month. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Today, the holiday serves as a celebration of freedom, resilience and progress while encouraging reflection on America’s ongoing journey toward equality. “Following the positive response to last year’s exhibit, we are excited to continue this tradition by offering new perspectives and learning opportunities for our campus and community,” said Sarah Rutallie, Chief of Staff at SC4. “This exhibition encourages meaningful conversations about history, freedom and the diverse experiences that have shaped our nation.” The exhibit reflects SC4’s commitment to educational programming that fosters cultural awareness, civic engagement and lifelong learning. Admission is free and open to the public. Kitty Donohoe performs at SC4

"SC4 continues its popular Noon and Night Concert Series with a cozy performance by Folk Singer/Songwriter Kitty Donohoe. Kitty Donohoe is an Ann Arbor-based singer/songwriter whose music blends Irish, Celtic, folk, and pop influences. She gained recognition for her song “There Are No Words,” written in response to 9/11, which earned her a Michigan Emmy. Kitty has opened for folk legends like Doc Watson, David Bromberg, Bruce Cockburn, and Cheryl Wheeler, and her songs have been covered by artists including Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary. A longtime performer, Kitty paused touring in the late 1980s to focus on family but now plays at festivals and clubs across the U.S. and Canada. Her music often celebrates Michigan, especially in her album Bunyan and Banjoes, featuring songs like “Michigan Waltz,” “Great Lakes Lights,” and “Michigan Gals.” Kitty Donohoe will perform at the SC4 Fine Arts Theatre at 12 PM and 7 PM on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
