Unknown City Council to Hold Public Hearing on Zoning Amendments Next Tuesday

Street & Sanitation | Departments Street & Sanitation STREET DEPARTMENT The Street Department maintains the City streets for the citizens who live within the city limits of Luverne. The duties of the department encompass a wide variety of jobs which include, but are not limited to, the following: Debris pickup Mosquito spraying (this is done in warmer months usually beginning in May and ending in September of each year) Repair sidewalks and curb gutters that are damaged Repairing potholes and striping city streets Sweep streets on a weekly basis Laying of pipe and cleaning of roadside ditches Clearing debris from storm water systems to allow the free flow of storm water Repairing washouts Maintain/replace stop signs, street signs, speed limit signs, and directional signs We collect an average of 125-150 cubic yards of debris each week and we are able to carry this to the county landfill, which is operated by Crenshaw County Landfill. SANITATION DEPARTMENT The Sanitation Department strives to maintain a safe, efficient and effective waste collection and disposal system that meets the needs of the citizens of Luverne and comply with all applicable regulations and standards. The solid waste (garbage) routes require two packer trucks, with three employees per truck. We collect an average of 225-250 tons of waste per week and haul it to the Coffee County Landfill. Household garbage pickup is scheduled once a week. Parks & Recreation
The Luverne Parks & Recreation Department provides activities and opportunities in recreational sports to the youth in our community. The Luverne Parks & Rec is also affiliated with Dixie Youth Baseball and Dixie Youth Softball. Our park is known for hosting local and district tournaments. E.L. Turner Park has four youth baseball and softball fields, a nice playground, a walking trail, tennis courts, a basketball court and two batting cages. The City of Luverne owns its own electrical utility and has one sub-station. The Electric Department serves the majority of the industrial, commercial, and residential customers of the city and also customers for the Town of Rutledge. The city strives to offer its citizens an adequate, reliable and economical supply of electric power and energy to its citizens. The general business, official records, and administrative duties of the City of Luverne are the responsibility of the City Clerk's Office. This office is responsible for the receipt, distribution and expenditure of all City funds, such as revenue from Business Licenses, Building Permits, Zoning Fees, Fines and all City taxes. The City Clerk is the City’s Chief Election Official and is responsible for the administration of Municipal Elections.
