Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Clay County: Prepare for Severe Weather
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Clay County by NWS Birmingham AL, effective until October 9, 2026, warning of hazardous wind, potential moderate flooding, and the possibility of several tornadoes; residents should prepare immediately.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Clay County, including Ashland, effective immediately by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, Alabama. This watch is in effect until 12:15 AM UTC on October 9, 2026. Residents should take immediate action to prepare for hazardous wind, potential flooding, and the possibility of tornadoes.
Wind speeds are forecast between 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. The NWS warns of potential for winds between 39 to 57 mph. Plan for hazardous wind of equivalent tropical storm force and complete all preparations to protect property now. Anticipate limited wind damage, including to porches, carports, and unanchored mobile homes, along with downed tree limbs and potential power outages.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter structures. Roads may become impassable due to debris or standing water.
The situation is favorable for tornadoes, with the potential for several, some of which could be intense with larger damage paths. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings, and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Significant impacts from tornadoes could include widespread damage, power loss, and dangerous projectiles.
