Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Clay County: Prepare Now

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Clay County, including Ashland, from October 9 at 1:19 AM CDT to 9:30 AM CDT, with warnings for hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes; residents should prepare now.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Clay County, including Ashland, effective immediately by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. Residents are urged to complete preparations now as hazardous conditions are anticipated.

Peak winds are forecast to reach 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, creating potential for wind speeds of 39 to 57 mph. This could lead to damage to unsecured property, broken tree limbs, and scattered power outages. Efforts to protect property should be underway.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Clay County can expect 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, posing a moderate flooding risk. This may cause evacuations and rescues, swollen rivers, and hazardous driving conditions. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

Furthermore, conditions are favorable for several tornadoes, with a potential for significant impacts including considerable damage, power loss, and communication failures. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly.

This Tropical Storm Watch is effective from October 9, 2026, at 1:19 AM CDT until October 9, 2026, at 9:30 AM CDT. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
