A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Clay County, including Ashland, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, effective tonight, October 8th, at 10:27 PM CDT. Residents are advised to act now to complete preparations for hazardous wind, potential flooding, and tornadoes.

The NWS forecasts peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, unanchored mobile homes, and significant tree limb breakage is possible. Scattered power and communication outages are also anticipated.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Peak rainfall amounts are expected to be 1-3 inches, with locally higher totals, posing a significant threat of moderate flooding. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and localized rapid inundation is possible in low-lying areas. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

The situation is favorable for tornadoes, with a potential for several, some of which could be intense. Prepare for potential tornado damage, power loss, and communication failures. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. This Tropical Storm Watch expires October 9th, 2026, at 6:30 AM UTC.
