A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Choctaw County, including Butler, Lisman, and Silas, warning of hazardous winds and moderate to significant flooding. Residents should complete property protection efforts, move to safe shelter, and heed all flood watches and warnings.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Choctaw County, effective tonight, October 8, at 9:57 PM CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL. This watch is in effect for the areas of Butler, Lisman, and Silas. Residents should prepare for hazardous wind and moderate to significant flooding.
The NWS forecasts peak winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for winds of 39 to 57 mph. All efforts to protect property should be completed as soon as possible, and residents should move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin. Potential impacts include damage to lightweight structures, downed tree limbs and some trees, impassable roads due to debris, and scattered power and communication outages.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 3-6 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This presents a potential for moderate flooding rain, which could lead to evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and floodwaters could enter structures. Driving conditions will become hazardous in affected areas, leading to possible road and bridge closures. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.
Tornadoes are not expected at this time. For more local information, contact the Choctaw County EMA at 205-459-2153 or visit www.facebook.com/lindsey.ema. For storm impacts, visit www.weather.gov/mob.
