Tropical Storm Warning Issued for North Walton: Prepare for Dangerous Conditions

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for North Walton, including De Funiak Springs, requiring immediate preparation for dangerous winds, major flooding, and potential tornadoes.

Staff Writer
10/08/2026 · Washington County edition

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for North Walton County, including De Funiak Springs, effective immediately as of October 8 at 11:06 AM EDT, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee, FL. This warning expires at 7:15 PM UTC today.

Residents should plan for dangerous wind conditions, with potential for strong tropical storm force winds between 58 to 73 mph. Peak wind forecasts are 20-30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Significant impacts are expected, including damage to roofing, siding, and mobile homes, as well as downed trees and power outages. All remaining efforts to protect life and property must be completed as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Major rainfall flooding is anticipated with 3-6 inches of rain, and localized higher amounts possible. Evacuations and rescues are likely, and rivers and small streams may overflow their banks. Heed all flood watches and warnings immediately. Failure to take protective action will likely result in serious injury or loss of life.

The situation is favorable for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those living in manufactured homes or on boats are urged to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if one is issued. Tornadoes can hinder emergency plans and cause significant damage, power loss, and communication failures.
