Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Chilton County: Prepare for High Winds, Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Chilton County, including Clanton, by the NWS, with peak winds up to 60 mph and significant flooding expected from early Saturday morning; residents should finalize preparations and seek safe shelter.
Chilton County residents, including Clanton, are urged to complete storm preparations immediately as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Birmingham AL, effective until 9:30 AM UTC today, October 9, 2026.
Tropical Storm force winds, with peak forecasts of 35-45 mph and gusts up to 60 mph, are expected from early Saturday morning through Saturday morning. Residents should move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous. Potential impacts include damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect broken tree limbs, some downed trees, and scattered power outages. Hazardous driving conditions are possible, especially on bridges.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. One to three inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, could lead to moderate flooding. Emergency plans should account for potential evacuations and rescues. Rivers and streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter some structures. Heed all flood watches and warnings, as failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.
The NWS indicates tornadoes are not expected. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
