Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Chilton County: Prepare for High Winds, Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Chilton County, including Clanton, from early Saturday morning until Saturday afternoon, bringing potential for 40-65 mph winds and significant flooding from 2-4 inches of rain; residents should prepare now and seek shelter.
Chilton County residents are urged to finalize preparations as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued, effective immediately. The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, issued the watch today, October 9, at 6:57 AM CDT.
Clanton and surrounding areas in Chilton County are expected to experience tropical storm force winds between 40-50 mph, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph. These hazardous winds are anticipated to begin early Saturday morning and continue through Saturday afternoon. Residents should move to safe shelter before the wind becomes hazardous. Potential impacts include damage to unanchored structures, broken tree limbs, a few snapped or uprooted trees, and scattered power and communication outages. Some roads may become impassable due to debris, particularly in urban or heavily wooded areas.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain forecast, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate flooding is a significant threat, potentially prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and small streams, creeks, and ditches could overflow. Floodwaters may enter structures and cause hazardous driving conditions. Heed all flood watches and warnings.
Tornadoes are not expected, according to the NWS. For more information and preparedness tips, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
