Dangerous Rip Currents, Large Waves Expected for Coastal Areas

A Rip Current Statement is in effect for coastal Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties through Sunday evening, with dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves expected.

Coastal residents and visitors in Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin. Dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves are expected to impact these coastal areas.

The Rip Current Risk is in effect now and will continue through Sunday evening, October 11th. A High Surf Risk is also in effect through 8 PM EDT this evening, October 10th. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to these dangerous surf conditions.

Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. If you plan to enter the water, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, remember to relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
