Rip Current Warning for Coastal Areas Until Wednesday Evening

A Rip Current Statement is in effect for coastal Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, Beaufort, Colleton, Charleston, and Jasper counties from Tuesday morning until Wednesday evening, with dangerous rip currents expected.

Coastal residents and visitors in Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, Beaufort, Colleton, Charleston, and Jasper counties should exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service Charleston SC. Dangerous rip currents are expected from Tuesday morning, October 5, until Wednesday evening, October 6, at 8:00 PM EDT.

These conditions affect all South Carolina and Georgia beaches. Rip currents are powerful and can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

High surf with breaking waves of 4 to 6 feet along the lower South Carolina coast and 5 to 7 feet along the Georgia coast is also anticipated. This, combined with strong northeast winds and elevated tides, increases the risk of significant beach erosion.

If you plan to be near the water, swim only near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises to relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
