Residents in Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi should prepare for hazardous conditions as Hurricane Isaias has strengthened to a Category 3 storm. The National Weather Service in New Orleans reports the center of Isaias will reach the Western Florida Panhandle coast this evening, October 9.

A Storm Surge Warning and Hurricane Warning are in effect for Southern Jackson. A Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch are in effect for Northern Jackson. A Storm Surge Warning and Tropical Storm Warning are active for Eastern Orleans, Lower Plaquemines, Lower St. Bernard, Southeast St. Tammany, Southern Hancock, and Southern Harrison. Northern Hancock and Northern Harrison are under a Tropical Storm Warning.

Isaias, with 115 mph winds, is moving north at 17 mph, approximately 200 miles east-southeast of New Orleans. Tropical storm force wind gusts and storm surge of 3 to 5 feet are expected in coastal Southeast Louisiana (excluding Lake Pontchartrain) and all of coastal Mississippi from this afternoon into tonight. Limited wind impacts and significant life-threatening surge are possible in affected areas. Stay inside and away from windows. Keep a battery-powered radio, charged cell phone, and flashlight ready. If in a flood-prone area, be prepared for rapidly rising water levels. The next update is expected around 11 PM CDT.
