A Dust Advisory has been issued for Maricopa and Pinal Counties in Arizona by the National Weather Service in Phoenix, effective immediately until 1:30 PM MST today, October 10. Residents are advised to prepare for reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions.
At 12:36 PM MST, a wall of dust was reported along a line from near Buckeye to 30 miles southeast of Gila Bend, moving northeast at 30 mph. This dust event is expected to bring less than one mile visibility and strong winds exceeding 40 mph, significantly impacting travel.
Locations impacted include Phoenix, Chandler, Glendale, Tempe, Surprise, Avondale, Goodyear, Buckeye, El Mirage, Tolleson, Youngtown, Cashion, Laveen, Waddell, Sun City, Sun Lakes, Sun City West, Maricopa, and Litchfield Park. Numerous highways are affected, including segments of AZ Route 87, AZ Interstate 8, AZ Route 202, AZ Route 101, US Highway 60, AZ Route 85, AZ Interstate 17, AZ Interstate 10, AZ Route 238, AZ Route 303, and AZ Route 347.
If you are driving, avoid blowing dust if possible. If caught in dense blowing dust, pull off the road, turn off your lights, and keep your foot off the brake. Blowing dust can also be unhealthy and has been linked to Valley Fever; avoid outdoor exposure.
