Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Imperial County; Take Precautions
An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for Imperial County until Friday evening, with temperatures up to 109 degrees; residents are urged to take immediate precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Residents of Imperial County, including the Imperial Valley and El Centro, are advised to take immediate precautions as an Extreme Heat Warning has been issued. The National Weather Service (NWS) Phoenix AZ has issued this warning, effective from Thursday, October 8 at 7:52 PM MST until Friday, October 9 at 8:00 PM MST (PDT).
Dangerously hot conditions are expected, with afternoon temperatures reaching between 104 and 109 degrees Fahrenheit. This constitutes a Major Heat Risk. The NWS warns that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during such events, with potential for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
To lessen the impact of the extreme heat, take extra precautions if working or spending time outdoors. Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water. Familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If overcome by heat, move to a cool, shaded location immediately. Heat stroke is an emergency; call 911.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for those working outdoors. Public cooling shelters may be available; residents should consult county officials for details on local resources.
