Coastal Brunswick: Beach Hazards, Flood Advisory Issued

Coastal Brunswick County faces a Beach Hazards Statement with strong longshore currents and rip current risk, plus a Coastal Flood Advisory with minor inundation expected today.

Coastal Brunswick County residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution due to a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC.

The Beach Hazards Statement is effective from 6 AM EDT this morning, October 10th, through this evening. It warns of a strong east to west longshore current and a moderate risk of rip currents. Swimmers and surfers could be swept into rip currents, piers, jetties, or other hazardous areas, making it difficult to return to shore. Caution should be used when in or near the water. The NWS advises checking with lifeguards before entering the ocean for possible hazards.

Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect from 6 AM to 10 AM EDT this morning, October 10th. Up to one half foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This may lead to minor coastal flooding on low-lying roads and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Residents in flood-prone properties should take necessary actions to protect their property. For specific road closures or impacts, check with local officials.

Both advisories are for Coastal Brunswick County.
