Coastal Brunswick Faces Flood Advisory, High Rip Current Risk
A Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for Coastal Brunswick County starting Saturday, October 10, bringing a moderate risk of rip currents and minor coastal flooding.
Coastal Brunswick County residents and visitors should exercise extreme caution as a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory have been issued by the National Weather Service Wilmington NC. Both alerts are in effect starting Saturday, October 10.
The Coastal Flood Advisory is active from 6 AM to 10 AM EDT on Saturday. Up to one half foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This may lead to minor coastal flooding on low-lying roads and areas along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks. If travel is necessary during this time, allow extra time and do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Residents in flood-prone properties should take necessary protective actions.
The Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from 6 AM EDT Saturday through Saturday evening. Strong east to west longshore currents are expected, and there is a moderate risk of rip currents. Longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into hazardous areas like piers and jetties, making it difficult to return to shore. Caution should be used when in or near the water. Check with lifeguards before entering the ocean for possible hazards.
For additional information on road closures or impacts, residents should check with local officials. The affected areas are based on average tide conditions, and additional flooding may occur with heavy rainfall or high winds.
