Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Strong Currents and Rip Current Risk for Coastal Brunswick

A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Coastal Brunswick County until 8:00 PM EDT today, warning of strong longshore currents and a moderate rip current risk; exercise caution and check with lifeguards.

Coastal Brunswick County residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution today, October 10, as a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC. The statement is effective immediately and remains in effect until 8:00 PM EDT this evening.

A strong east to west longshore current is present, along with a moderate risk of rip currents. These conditions can be hazardous, as longshore currents are capable of sweeping swimmers and surfers into rip currents, piers, jetties, and other dangerous areas. Swimmers may also find it difficult to maintain their footing and return to shore.

The NWS urges individuals in or near the water to use caution. Before entering the ocean, it is recommended to check with lifeguards for information on possible hazards. The affected areas are based on average tide conditions, but additional locations could experience flooding if there is heavy rainfall, high winds, or other contributing factors.
