Extreme Heat Warning for Death Valley National Park; Winds Expected
An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for Death Valley National Park until 8:00 PM PDT today, October 9, 2026, with temperatures near 110 degrees, alongside a Wind Advisory expecting gusts up to 60 mph.
An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for Death Valley National Park, effective immediately until 8:00 PM PDT this evening, October 9, 2026. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Las Vegas reports dangerously hot conditions with temperatures near 110 degrees Fahrenheit and overnight lows between 80 and 85 degrees. This will result in at least major Heat Risk, impacting anyone without adequate cooling and hydration.
The NWS also issued a Wind Advisory for the same area, beginning at 2:00 PM PDT Saturday and lasting until 5:00 AM PDT Monday. South winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected. There may be a lull in winds late Saturday night through Sunday morning before increasing again Sunday afternoon.
The affected area includes elevations in Death Valley National Park below 2000 feet. Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. Gusty winds can blow around unsecured objects, potentially bringing down tree limbs and causing power outages.
Residents and visitors are advised to take immediate precautions. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, and stay out of the sun. Check on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors will reach lethal temperatures quickly. If working outdoors, schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. If someone is overcome by heat, move them to a cool, shaded location and call 911 immediately as heat stroke is an emergency.
For the Wind Advisory, secure outdoor objects. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Use extra caution while driving. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates from the National Weather Service.
