Wind Advisory & Extreme Heat Warning for Death Valley
A Wind Advisory and Extreme Heat Warning are in effect for Death Valley National Park, with strong winds up to 60 mph expected and dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 100 degrees.
Residents and visitors in Death Valley National Park should prepare for a Wind Advisory and an ongoing Extreme Heat Warning. The National Weather Service (NWS) Las Vegas has issued these alerts, effective immediately.
The Wind Advisory is in effect from Saturday, October 10 at 2 PM PDT until Monday, October 12 at 5 AM PDT. South winds are expected to reach 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph. These strong winds can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, and may blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be downed, and isolated power outages are possible.
An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until Friday, October 9 at 8 PM PDT. Dangerously hot conditions are present, with heat index values up to 100 degrees. Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity.
The NWS advises the following actions: Secure all outdoor objects. When driving, use extra caution, particularly if operating a high-profile vehicle. To combat the heat, drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid direct sun exposure, and check on relatives and neighbors. Never leave children or pets in unattended vehicles, as interior temperatures can become lethal rapidly. Limit strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or evening hours. If working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. If you or someone you know shows symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, move to a cool, shaded location immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency; call 911.
