Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches Issued for Coastal Areas
Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches are in effect for coastal Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi as Tropical Storm Isaias strengthens, with impacts expected Friday into Saturday.
Residents in Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi must prepare immediately as Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches have been issued for portions of the area due to strengthening Tropical Storm Isaias.
The National Weather Service in New Orleans issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement today, October 7, at 10:49 AM CDT. Watches are in effect for Upper St. Bernard, Lower St. Bernard, Southeast St. Tammany, Eastern Orleans, Lower Plaquemines, Southern Hancock, Southern Harrison, and Southern Jackson parishes and counties. A Hurricane Watch and Storm Surge Watch are in effect for Southern Harrison and Southern Jackson. A Tropical Storm Watch and Storm Surge Watch are in effect for Eastern Orleans, Lower Plaquemines, Lower St. Bernard, Southeast St. Tammany, and Southern Hancock. Upper St. Bernard is under a Storm Surge Watch.
Isaias, currently located about 560 miles south-southwest of New Orleans, is strengthening with 45 mph winds and moving east-northeast at 8 mph. Impacts are expected Friday into Saturday, including tropical storm to hurricane-force wind gusts, locally heavy rainfall, and storm surges of 3 to 7 feet.
Residents should secure homes and businesses, check emergency kits, and stay informed. Monitor official updates from weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news. The next local statement is expected around 5 PM CDT.
