A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Southern Hancock County, effective immediately from the National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans, LA. This watch covers Kiln, Pearlington, Bay St. Louis, Diamondhead, and Waveland. Life-threatening storm surge flooding is possible, with peak inundation potentially reaching 3-5 feet above ground in surge-prone areas.

Residents in these areas should prepare for significant impacts. The NWS advises planning for life-threatening storm surge flooding greater than 3 feet above ground. Storm surge preparations should be underway, including assembling disaster supplies and knowing your evacuation route. If evacuation orders are given for your area, leave immediately. Failure to heed evacuation orders may result in loss of life.

The window of concern for this storm surge is from Friday morning until Saturday morning. Wind gusts up to 35 mph are expected, with a potential for winds of 58 to 73 mph. Efforts to protect life and property should now be underway. Act now to complete preparations before hazardous winds begin. Potential impacts include damage to roofing, siding, and mobile homes, snapped trees, and scattered power outages. Rainfall of 1-3 inches is also expected, with localized flooding possible. Tornadoes are not expected.
