Dangerous Rip Currents Expected for Matagorda and Brazoria Beaches
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Matagorda and Brazoria County beaches until 1 AM CDT Saturday, warning of dangerous rip currents that can pull swimmers into deeper water.
Beachgoers are advised that a Rip Current Statement has been issued for Gulf-facing beaches, including the Matagorda Peninsula and Brazoria County beaches. This statement is effective immediately, October 9, at 1:51 PM CDT, and will remain in effect until 1:00 AM CDT on Saturday, October 10.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston TX has issued this moderate severity alert due to dangerous rip currents that can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. This warning also applies to Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.
The NWS advises individuals to swim near a lifeguard and to avoid swimming near rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, the primary instruction is to relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and signal for help by calling or waving.
