Jeanne Gee Obituary (Oakland, CA)
Jeanne GeeMay 13, 1928 - April 28, 2026Oakland, CAJeanne Yet Tong Gee died peacefully on April 28, 2026 at the age of 97. She was the beloved wife of James Gee for 69 years, loving mother of Linda, Leonora, Ronald, Michael, and Lauren; devoted grandmother of Jonathan, Delanie, Lindsay, Rebecca, Alina, Rachel, and Kade; great-grandmother to Jimshi, Lila, Mathilda, Juliet, Roxanna, and Ruby; and is survived by one sister, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. She will be greatly missed.A strong and independent woman, she ran her own business while raising five children, sponsored and supported many relatives and family, and took courses at Laney College. Retired from the Oakland Unified School District, she spent more than 20 years as a Bilingual Instructional Aide and Assistant Teacher at Franklin Elementary School. She also became a surrogate grandmother to many children. She was an active member of the SEIU union and served on many committees for the local chapter. Never one to stay idle, she enjoyed walking, exercising, and traveling.The funeral service will take place at 11:00 am on Monday, May 11, 2026 at Mountain View Cemetery, Tower Chapel, 5000 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA with burial to follow.If you would like to send a message to the family, you may do so at the email address below:[email protected]

Yu Fong passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion to family.She was born on May 22, 1930, in Kaiping, Guangdong, China. She received her education in her hometown and married Wai Fong in 1947. Their marriage was one of deep love and harmony, and together they built a life grounded in mutual care and devotion. She was known for her kindness, her strength in managing the household, and her deep respect and devotion to her parents and elders. She held high standards in raising her children, guiding them with both discipline and love.After leaving her hometown, she lived in Hong Kong before immigrating to the United States in 1976. With the support of family and friends, she adapted quickly to her new life and worked diligently for many years in the garment industry. In retirement, she enjoyed a life of comfort and fulfillment, traveling to many places around the world and spending time playing mahjong with family and friends.She is survived by six children, twelve grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren, whose lives stand as a testament to the loving legacy she built.Her passing leaves an immeasurable sense of loss and longing among her family. Her voice, her presence, and her spirit will forever remain in their hearts. Joan Barnett Obituary (Berkeley, CA)
Joan Virginia Barnett (née Brunet), age 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 25, 2026, at her home in Berkeley, California, where she had lived for the past 60 years. She was surrounded by her daughters Michelle Katherine Barnett, Berkeley, Lisa Ellen Barnett Sween (John), Lafayette and her sons Peter Andrew Barnett (Kirin), Costa Mesa; Joel Alexander Barnett (Pamela), Bear Valley, as well as her sister Constance “Connie” Jabbar and niece Leila Jabbar, who traveled from New York and North Carolina to be at Joan’s side in her final days. Her grandchildren Aaron Barnett, Aidan Barnett, Ryan Barnett, Caroline Sween and Carter Sween also were by her side in her final days. Joan also is survived by her stepdaughter Suzanne Barnett Looker (Neil), Colorado, and stepson David Mark Barnett, San Francisco.Joan was born on December 4, 1933, in North Adams, Massachusetts, during one of the harshest winters Western Massachusetts had ever experienced. She was the daughter of Paul and Ellen (Andrews) Brunet. She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Franklyn Melville Barnett, who she married on April 26, 1960; her sisters, Barbara (Hamdan), and Marilyn Brunet.In 1956, Joan graduated from the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and later earned a master’s degree in child psychology from the University of Detroit. She built a meaningful professional life, working as an executive assistant at Sutro & Co. in San Francisco before transitioning into real estate with Elmwood Realty, a firm her husband co-founded in 1986.Deeply committed to civic life, Joan devoted countless hours to her neighborhood association and remained an engaged and generous member of her Berkeley community throughout her life. She was very active in Berkeley politics, and her living room became a place familiar to many who joined her in various committee meetings.Among her most enduring contributions was the founding of Nations Incorporated in 1962, a nonprofit organization she established with Frank during the height of the Cold War. At a time when global education was largely absent from American secondary schools, Joan and Frank created an innovative program that addressed this gap. The organization’s flagship program, the “Workshop of Nations,” was held each summer in La Honda in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. It brought together American high school students for an immersive experience designed to foster global awareness and cross-cultural understanding. The program uniquely combined outdoor education, international relations, and cultural immersion—an approach that was well ahead of its time and a precursor to modern global studies and international exchange programs. Students were organized into regional study groups—such as Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East—each guided by international scholars and American moderators from Stanford, UC Berkeley and Princeton. Through a blend of academic rigor and communal living, participants explored topics including culture and identity, geography and resources, colonialism and modernization, religion and philosophy, Cold War geopolitics, and the role of the United Nations. Joan believed deeply in the power of education to reduce international conflict, and the program emphasized dialogue, debate, and learning directly from global perspectives.In her personal life, Joan found great joy in simple, steady routines. She loved reading history, trading stock, tending her garden and took delight in the birds that visited her patio, often arriving in search of almonds she set out for them. She was an avid walker with her best friend Sue McKnight, and made a tradition of walking the Lafayette–Moraga Trail every Sunday with her daughter—continuing this ritual through her final Easter Sunday.Joan will be remembered for her intellectual curiosity, her devotion to her family, her commitment to education and community, and her belief in building bridges across cultures. Her legacy lives on in the many colleagues whose lives she helped shape.A funeral Mass will be held on May 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Newman Center in Berkeley, California, followed by a celebration of life.
Carl Bowie Obituary (Oakland, CA)
Carl Bowie was born on October 13, 1963, in San Francisco, California, to Roy and Clara Bowie. He was the fifth of six sons and was raised in Oakland, California, surrounded by family, faith, and community.Carl was active and full of life from an early age. He loved roller skating and enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, and pool. Later in life, he enjoyed watching Family Feud and comedy shows, which brought him laughter and joy.Raised in the East Oakland Church of God in Christ alongside his brothers, Carl developed a foundation of faith that remained with him throughout his life. In later years, he renewed his commitment to God and sought to serve Him faithfully.Carl was gifted with his hands and had a natural ability to fix things, from bicycles and cars to toys and household items. He also learned to cut hair and took pride in always being neat and well-groomed.He was known for his dedication in warehouse operations as a certified forklift driver and foreman overseeing inventory and quality control. He took pride in doing his work well and helping others.Carl was strong, determined, and full of character. He could be firm and direct, yet he also had a loving and caring side that will be remembered by those who knew him best.In January 2023, Carl was formally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia. Despite the challenges of the illness, he faced each day with courage while trying to maintain the independence he valued so deeply.Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Clara Bowie; his brother, Kerry Bowie; and his son, Carl Jr. Bowie, who was stillborn.He leaves to cherish his memory his two daughters, Ashley and Demaria; four grandchildren; four brothers, Rory, Donald, Raymond, and Gregory; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.Carl will be remembered for his strength, his skills, his faith, and the lasting impact he had on all who knew and loved him.
