Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Dangerous Surf, Coastal Flooding Expected
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for San Diego and Orange County Coastal Areas until 10 PM PDT, with dangerous surf up to 9 feet, coastal flooding, and rip currents expected; take action to protect property and avoid hazardous waters.
Residents in San Diego County Coastal Areas and Orange County Coastal Areas are advised to take immediate action as a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service San Diego CA. This statement is effective immediately, October 11 at 1:28 PM PDT, and continues until October 11 at 10:00 PM PDT.
A Coastal Flood Warning is also in effect through Sunday afternoon, October 13, for significant coastal flooding and beach erosion. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory will be active from 3 PM PDT Sunday, October 13, until 2 PM PDT Tuesday, October 15, with minor coastal flooding expected during this period.
During the Beach Hazards Statement, surf of 5 to 7 feet with local sets up to 9 feet is anticipated. These conditions will lead to a high risk of rip currents and dangerous swimming conditions. The greatest impacts are occurring this morning due to Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel, bringing increased swell, onshore winds, and high tides locally exceeding 7.5 feet.
Impacts include potential closure of numerous roads and beach boardwalks due to high water. Low-lying properties, including homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, may experience flooding during morning high tides. Beach erosion is also likely.
The National Weather Service advises taking necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions.
