A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Sumter County, including Americus, effective immediately, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City GA. This warning is in effect until 1:30 AM UTC on October 10, 2026. Residents are urged to complete all preparations immediately.

The NWS forecasts peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39-57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect many large tree limbs to break, some trees to snap or uproot, and scattered power and communication outages. Hazardous driving conditions are expected, especially on elevated roadways.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain anticipated, potentially leading to moderate flooding, evacuations, and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may quickly swell. Avoid floodwaters.

The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or boats should prepare to relocate to safer shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued.
