A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Sumter County, issued by NWS Peachtree City, with hazardous winds, significant flooding, and potential tornadoes expected to impact areas like Americus within the next 36 hours; residents should complete preparations immediately.
SUMTER COUNTY, GA – The National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Sumter County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 11:16 AM EDT. Residents, particularly in Americus, should finalize preparations now as tropical storm-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours, expiring October 9, 2026 at 7:30 PM UTC.
Peak winds are forecast to be 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, posing a risk of limited damage to unanchored structures, large tree limbs, and some power outages. Act now to secure outdoor items. Scattered power and communications outages are possible.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, locally higher amounts. This could lead to moderate flooding, swollen rivers, and impassable roads. Prepare for potential evacuations and heed all flood watches and warnings.
Furthermore, conditions are favorable for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if issued. Significant impacts, including structural damage and power loss, are possible.
