SUMTER COUNTY, GA – The National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Sumter County, including Americus, effective immediately as of October 8 at 11:17 AM EDT. This means tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours. The watch is set to expire on October 8 at 7:30 PM UTC (3:30 PM EDT).

Residents should act now to complete preparations before hazardous wind conditions arrive. Forecasts indicate peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, but the NWS warns of the potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Prepare for limited wind damage, including to porches, awnings, and carports. Unsecured objects should be brought inside or tied down. Expect potential for tree limb breakage and some power/communications outages.

Moderate flooding rain is also a significant concern, with 1-3 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding, which could lead to evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and flood waters could enter structures or weaken foundations. Hazardous driving conditions are expected in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

The situation is also favorable for tornadoes, with the potential for several, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings, and be ready to shelter quickly if issued. Tornadoes can cause considerable damage, power loss, and communications failures.
