SUMTER COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Sumter County, including Americus, effective immediately by the National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City GA, as of October 8 at 9:16 PM EDT. This watch indicates the potential for hazardous conditions, including tropical storm force winds, moderate flooding rain, and several tornadoes.

Residents should immediately begin preparations for potential impacts. Efforts to protect property should be underway, and all preparations must be completed before hazardous winds arrive. The NWS forecasts peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, but warns of potential for winds reaching 39 to 57 mph. Limited damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible, along with downed tree limbs and scattered power outages.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings, as failure to take action can result in serious injury or loss of life. Additionally, the situation is favorable for tornadoes, with the potential for several, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if issued.

This watch is effective from October 8, 2026, 9:16 PM UTC, and expires on October 9, 2026, 5:30 AM UTC. For more information, visit weather.gov/atlanta or ready.gov/hurricanes.
