Bryan College Junior Wins Prestigious Ledford Scholarship for Constitutional Research
Bryan College junior Nathanael Butler has been awarded a prestigious Ledford Scholarship from the Appalachian College Association (ACA), recognizing his academic excellence and supporting his original research in the field of political and legal studies.Butler, a Politics and Government major, is conducting research that examines and compares the originalist judicial philosophies of U.S. Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. His work explores how each justice interprets and applies the Constitution, contributing to ongoing conversations about constitutional interpretation and civic understanding.Advancing Research in Constitutional InterpretationButler first presented his research at Bryan College’s undergraduate research conference this spring and will continue developing the project through the support of the Ledford Scholarship. For him, the work goes beyond academic interest.“Getting to conduct research on important legal issues is not only enjoyable to me,” Butler said, “but it highlights a key issue in society, which is a lack of civic education.” He described the opportunity as “quite literally the ‘dream summer job.’”A Passion Guided by MentorshipAccording to faculty mentor Dr. Andrew Kaufmann, Butler’s research focus reflects a longstanding academic passion.“When Nathanael started as a student at Bryan, it was clear he had a special interest in the Supreme Court and how to faithfully interpret and apply the U.S. Constitution,” Kaufmann said. “It was therefore no surprise to me that when we first met to discuss possible topics to pursue as a Ledford Scholar, he wanted to explore the philosophy of originalism.”Kaufmann noted that Butler’s chosen topic—a comparison of Scalia’s and Thomas’s originalist frameworks—is especially relevant in today’s legal and cultural landscape. He expressed enthusiasm about the next phase of Butler’s work as it expands beyond his initial conference presentation.A Community of SupportButler emphasized the impact of mentorship in his academic journey, crediting Kaufmann for his guidance and encouragement.“I’m indebted to Dr. Andrew Kaufmann for serving as my faculty mentor,” Butler said. “If it wasn’t for his teaching, encouragement, and willingness to serve in this role, I wouldn’t be a Ledford Scholar.”Kaufmann also expressed appreciation for the Appalachian College Association’s investment in students.“It’s a real service to ACA’s member colleges and universities,” he said, “and I hope students at Bryan continue to take advantage of this opportunity.”Living Out the Bryan College MissionButler’s achievement reflects Bryan College’s commitment to academic excellence and Christ-centered purpose. His dedication to exploring complex legal issues and promoting civic understanding exemplifies the college’s mission of educating students to become servants of Christ who make a difference in today’s world. To learn more about Bryan College and its Politics and Government program, visit https://www.bryan.edu/degrees/politics-government-ba/ The post Nathanael Butler Named Ledford Scholar by Appalachian College Association appeared first on Bryan College | Dayton, TN.

Bryan College Promotes Two Leaders in Student Services
By Nick Pacurari, Vice President for Enrollment Services and Student LifeOne of the things I love most about Bryan College is that we get to celebrate people who deserve it.This past week, we announced two promotions. Dr. Alex Staup is now Associate Vice President for Student Life and Success. Leigha Miller is now Associate Vice President for Enrollment. If you’ve been around Bryan for any length of time, this isn’t surprising. Both of them have been leading at this level. We’re just making it official. But I don’t want to treat this like an org chart update. I want to tell you why it matters, because these two stories say something important about who we are.Alex came to Bryan in 2024. He oversees the Academic Resource Center and Counseling Services, co-chairs the QEP Steering Committee and the CARE Team, and has built support systems that serve students whether they study on campus, online, or through dual enrollment. He just earned his Ph.D. from Purdue. He was recognized nationally with the Ruth Bamford Award, which honors professionals who do outstanding work bringing faith and learning together in student development. Alex is brilliant, but what sets him apart is that his brilliance is aimed at helping students flourish. That’s what drew him to Bryan, and that’s what keeps him here.Leigha has been at Bryan for almost a decade. She’s a lifelong Rhea County resident who earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees through Bryan College Online as an adult learner, working full-time while completing her education. She was the driving force behind establishing the Academic Resource Center, building student support systems that have made a measurable difference in retention and success. Now leading enrollment, she’s helped Bryan welcome record-breaking classes, including the largest residential class in our history last fall. Leigha is a product of this place, and she’s given herself right back to it and its students.President Dr. Doug Mann put it this way: “What a privilege to be able to work alongside Alex and Leigha. At Bryan, leadership is not simply about titles; it is about faithful service, meaningful impact, and a commitment to helping students flourish. These promotions reflect all three.”I’ll add my own word. Alex and Leigha have made so much of what we’re experiencing as an institution possible. I don’t take that lightly. Scripture reminds us that faithful stewardship in the small things leads to greater responsibility, and that’s exactly what we’ve watched play out with both of them. Their leadership has sharpened my own, and I’m a better leader because I get to work alongside people who aren’t driven by titles. They’re driven by the Lord and a desire to see His Kingdom reflected on our campus. That’s the kind of place Bryan is. We don’t just hire people to fill roles. We invest in people who are called, and they invest right back. When a prospective student or family asks me what makes Bryan different, I could point to our programs, our campus, our record enrollment numbers. But the truest answer is simpler than that. It’s the people. People like Alex and Leigha, who show up every day not for a paycheck or a title but because they believe God is doing something here and they want to be part of it.If you’re looking for a college where your student will be known, supported, and pointed toward Christ, this is what that looks like on the ground. Bryan College Redefines Student Success Beyond Grades and Degrees
What Student Success Really Means at Bryan CollegeWhen families think about student success, it’s easy to picture the obvious milestones: good grades, a polished résumé, and a degree in hand. Those things matter. However, at Bryan College, we believe success means something far more valuable than a transcript or a diploma. Success is about who a student is becoming. Our mission at Bryan College is “Educating students to become servants of Christ to make a difference in today’s world.” That means success isn’t measured by academic achievement alone, but by formation in the likeness of Christ—the shaping of character, purpose, resilience, and a life oriented toward service. We want students to grow not just in what they know, but in how they know and who they are.In many ways, our understanding of success echoes a definition from legendary basketball coach John Wooden: real success comes from doing our best to become the best we are capable of becoming. It’s not about perfection, but peace of mind in God’s calling for our lives through steady, intentional, meaningful growth guided by mentors who know students personally and care about their development.A Holistic Approach to Student SuccessAt Bryan, student success is holistic.Yes, we support students academically. But we also seek to walk with them through questions of identity in Christ, calling, motivation, and belonging. We help them navigate challenges, build healthy habits, and discover strengths they didn’t know they had. We celebrate wins, but we also help students learn from setbacks with courage and grace. There are countless individuals who seek to serve and support students in these ways:Academic advisorsSuccess coaches in the Academic Resource Center (ARC)Resident directorsResident assistantsFaculty members investing in students both inside and outside the classroomEach plays an important role in contributing to student success. What Success Looks Like at BryanSuccess at Bryan can look different in every season of college life:A freshman connecting with an advisor and navigating challenges in College AlgebraA sophomore reflecting on motivational assessments through Calling & Career and gaining clarity about vocationA junior stepping into leadership as a Peer Mentor to serve incoming studentsA senior entering the world ready to serve with competence and convictionUltimately, success looks like graduates who are prepared—not just for a career, but for a life of purpose serving God’s Kingdom.More Than AchievementWe know parents want to know that their student will be supported, challenged, and known. Our commitment is to walk alongside each student as they grow into the person God has called them to be. Bryan College Celebrates First Nursing Graduates with Historic Pinning Ceremony
Bryan College marked a significant milestone in its history on May 1 as the Clara Ward School of Nursing celebrated its first graduating class with a traditional pinning ceremony. The following day, the nine graduates joined their peers in walking across the stage at commencement, marking the culmination of their academic journey. The ceremony served not only as a recognition of academic achievement but also as a meaningful moment of reflection and commissioning, highlighting Bryan College’s commitment to preparing nurses who are grounded in faith and called to serve others.A Milestone Moment for the CollegeThe inaugural class represents the realization of a long-standing vision to establish a nursing program rooted in both academic excellence and a distinctly Christian mission. Years of investment from donors, faculty, and leadership contributed to making this moment possible. In his opening remarks, Bryan College President Douglas F. Mann acknowledged the significance of the occasion and the many individuals who played a role in bringing the program to life.A Ceremony Rich in Tradition and MeaningThe pinning ceremony honored long-standing traditions within the nursing profession. Each graduate received a gold nursing pin presented by Pamela Giles, featuring symbols that reflect both the profession and the college’s identity, including a laurel wreath for victory, a book for knowledge, a lamp representing the legacy of nursing, and a lion symbolizing Bryan College. The ceremony also included a time of spiritual commissioning. Brian Conley led an anointing of hands and offered a prayer, encouraging graduates to serve as ambassadors of Christ in their work.Professors Connie Petty and Rebekah Kemp guided students through a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony before the class recited the Florence Nightingale Pledge, a historic declaration of commitment to ethical and compassionate care.Commissioned to ServeFor faculty and graduates alike, the ceremony represented more than the completion of a degree. It marked a transition into a calling.“This is a time to reflect and celebrate tremendous achievements,” said Dr. Giles. “It is also a commissioning, where we send these graduates forth to serve as the hands and feet of Christ.”Through the Clara Ward School of Nursing, Bryan College continues to live out its mission of educating students to become servants of Christ who make a difference in today’s world. As the first class of nursing graduates steps into their careers, they carry forward both the traditions of their profession and the values that have shaped their education. To learn more about Bryan College and the Clara Ward School of Nursing, visit bryan.edu/nursing.
