Bryan College marked a significant milestone in its history on May 1 as the Clara Ward School of Nursing celebrated its first graduating class with a traditional pinning ceremony. The following day, the nine graduates joined their peers in walking across the stage at commencement, marking the culmination of their academic journey.The ceremony served not only as a recognition of academic achievement but also as a meaningful moment of reflection and commissioning, highlighting Bryan College’s commitment to preparing nurses who are grounded in faith and called to serve others.A Milestone Moment for the CollegeThe inaugural class represents the realization of a long-standing vision to establish a nursing program rooted in both academic excellence and a distinctly Christian mission. Years of investment from donors, faculty, and leadership contributed to making this moment possible.In his opening remarks, Bryan College President Douglas F. Mann acknowledged the significance of the occasion and the many individuals who played a role in bringing the program to life.A Ceremony Rich in Tradition and MeaningThe pinning ceremony honored long-standing traditions within the nursing profession. Each graduate received a gold nursing pin presented by Pamela Giles, featuring symbols that reflect both the profession and the college’s identity, including a laurel wreath for victory, a book for knowledge, a lamp representing the legacy of nursing, and a lion symbolizing Bryan College.The ceremony also included a time of spiritual commissioning. Brian Conley led an anointing of hands and offered a prayer, encouraging graduates to serve as ambassadors of Christ in their work.Professors Connie Petty and Rebekah Kemp guided students through a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony before the class recited the Florence Nightingale Pledge, a historic declaration of commitment to ethical and compassionate care.Commissioned to ServeFor faculty and graduates alike, the ceremony represented more than the completion of a degree.
