Former Special Counsel Jack Smith Addresses Trump Indictments on Capitol Hill

Why it matters locally: While the indictments are federal, the legal proceedings and outcomes could significantly influence national political discourse, which in turn affects voter perspectives and engagement in Ohio, a key swing state.

Former Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith discussed two criminal indictments against former President Donald Trump on Capitol Hill. Smith's appearance focused on the investigations he oversaw, which resulted in charges against the former president. Smith previously led two separate federal investigations. One investigation examined Trump's handling of classified documents after leaving office. The second investigation focused on efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. A federal grand jury indicted Trump in June 2023 in Florida on charges related to the classified documents. These charges included willful retention of national defense information and obstruction of justice. Another federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., indicted Trump in August 2023 on charges related to the 2020 election. These charges included conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of an official proceeding. Smith's role as special counsel concluded following these legal actions. He supervised prosecutors and agents involved in the inquiries. His statements on Capitol Hill addressed the legal basis and process of these investigations.
