Yuma residents are advised to take immediate precautions as an Extreme Heat Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Phoenix AZ. The warning is effective from Thursday, October 8, at 7:52 PM MST until Friday, October 9, at 8:00 PM MST.

Dangerously hot conditions are expected, with afternoon temperatures reaching 103 to 107 degrees Fahrenheit. This constitutes a Major Heat Risk, significantly increasing the potential for heat-related illnesses.

The NWS warns that overexposure can lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion, which can progress to heat stroke if not addressed. Heat stroke is an emergency; call 911 immediately if someone is overcome by heat and move them to a cool, shaded location.

Residents should take extra precautions, especially if working or spending time outdoors. Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for outdoor workers.

Public cooling shelters may be available; consult county officials for details.
