York County Approves $22K for Wessels Living History Farm

York County commissioners approved a $22,000 grant to repair the Wessels Living History Farm's failed heating and cooling system, deteriorating windmill infrastructure, and weathered highway signage.
The allocation from the York County Visitor Improvement Fund will replace the house's HVAC system, which failed last summer; repair the farm's windmill and well house; and install new signage along Highway 81.
Wessels Board President Tom Landmesser told commissioners the windmill and well house need replacement parts to remain structurally sound. The Highway 81 sign has stood for 20 years and shows significant wear. Wessels Director Shawna Bigelow said the air conditioning protects visitor comfort and the artifacts inside.
Commissioner Randy Obermier, who represents the county on the York County Visitors Bureau board, said Wessels is one of the county's few true tourism draws. "The board felt this is a great project and there is plenty of money in the fund," Obermier said.
The visitor improvement fund holds $337,000 generated through county lodging taxes. One other allocation is scheduled for a city auditorium project.
