High Wind Warning Issued: Damaging Winds and Power Outages Expected
A High Wind Warning is in effect for multiple Western North Carolina counties until Sunday, October 11, at 8:00 AM EDT, with damaging winds up to 60 mph and widespread power outages expected.
Residents in Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, Southern Jackson, and Transylvania counties should prepare for a High Wind Warning in effect until Sunday, October 11, at 8:00 AM EDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg SC has issued this severe alert, anticipating damaging winds and widespread power outages, particularly at higher elevations.
At elevations above 3500 feet, southeast winds of 10 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Below 3500 feet, a Wind Advisory is in effect with southeast winds of 5 to 20 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. These conditions can blow down trees and power lines, with widespread power outages anticipated in higher elevations. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
The NWS advises residents to remain in the lower levels of their homes during the windstorm and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. If driving is necessary, use extreme caution. Unsecured objects may be blown around, and isolated power outages are possible in lower elevations due to falling tree limbs. Stay tuned to local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for further information.
