Satellites Document European Landscape Changes Amid Summer Heatwaves

Why it matters locally: While focused on Europe, the satellite technology discussed here has implications for monitoring similar climate-driven landscape changes, such as glacial retreat and shifts in water levels, that are also occurring in Alaska.

Satellite technology has documented the effects of extreme heat and drought conditions across Europe during recent summer periods. These observations include visible alterations to geographical features. Images captured from space have shown shrinking glaciers in certain regions. Other satellite data has revealed an exposed shipwreck, indicating reduced water levels in a particular area.
