Chief's residence, Howkan

Chief's residence, Howkan

Totem poles at Howkan

Captioned "Totem poles at Kaigan or Howkan ". A house with horizontal siding and glass windows, totem poles, a bell on a pole tower, and two fishing canoes. Scidmore's text makes it clear that this location was Howkan on Long Island, Cordova Bay, Alaska and that the original village of Kaigahnee, as she spells it, was a different place "many miles distant"; she says that the traders called the present village Kaigahnee more often than Howkan. From her description this is the house of Chief Skolk
